Winterizing Tip #3 - Replace Your Filters

When was the last time you replaced your filter on your heating/air unit? This is one of the easiest and quickest steps you can take to maintain your system and save on your energy bills, yet it is one that is easily forgotten by many.

When your filter clogs, air is not able to properly flow through the system, causing the unit to work harder at producing heat. If the filter becomes severely clogged, it can even cause your system to overheat.

You should check your filters once a month. Set a date and put it on the calendar. If you cannot see light coming through the filter, it is time to replace it.

Winterizing Tip #2 - Wrap Your Pipes

Another great way to make your home more energy efficient is to wrap your pipes. All under your house you have exposed pipes that shed heat.  Wrapping them will not only help you maintain the heat in the pipes, allowing your water heater to not have to work as hard, but will prevent your pipes from freezing and bursting.

Winterizing Tip #1 - Insulate your Water Heater

Feel your water heater with your hand. If it feels warm, then the tank is losing heat. The typical water heater always has 20 to 60 gallons of hot water at the ready whether you're at home doing laundry every day or on vacation for a week. As it loses heat, it has to constantly re-warm the water.

A quick remedy for this is to lower the temperature on your heater, just make sure you do not lower it below 120 degrees Fahrenheit. Another option is to put a timer on the water heater so it doesn't waste unnecessary heat throughout the day while you are not home.

A great idea is to wrap a fiberglass insulation blanket around the tank. Be certain to check your owners manual to make sure the manufacturer doesn't recommend against it. If it is an option for you it can save a lot of heat loss and make your home much more energy efficient.
