Feel your water heater with your hand. If it feels warm, then the tank is losing heat. The typical water heater always has 20 to 60 gallons of hot water at the ready whether you're at home doing laundry every day or on vacation for a week. As it loses heat, it has to constantly re-warm the water.
A quick remedy for this is to lower the temperature on your heater, just make sure you do not lower it below 120 degrees Fahrenheit. Another option is to put a timer on the water heater so it doesn't waste unnecessary heat throughout the day while you are not home.
A great idea is to wrap a fiberglass insulation blanket around the tank. Be certain to check your owners manual to make sure the manufacturer doesn't recommend against it. If it is an option for you it can save a lot of heat loss and make your home much more energy efficient.
